Vinesh Phogat won Bronze- maiden Wrestling World Championships 2019 medal


Indian wrestler VineshPhogat, defeated Greece’s two-time world bronze medalist Maria Prevolaraki and won a bronze medal in the women’s 53kg category at the “2019 World Wrestling Championships” held in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan. Earlier she won both matches of the repechage round in the 53kg category and became the first Indian wrestler to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She is only the 4th Indian female wrestler to win a medal at the tournament.

In the first repechage round Vinesh defeated Ukraine’s former World Championships bronze medallistYuliyaKhalvadzhy and defeated world championship silver medallist Sarah Hildebrand (America) in the second repechage round to qualify for the Tokyo olympics.

  • She is the first Indian woman wrestler to win Gold in 2014 and2018 Commonwealth games and gold in 2018 Asian games.
  • She is the first Indian athlete nominated for the 2019 Laureus World Sports Awards.
  • She was honoured with 2016 Arjuna award.
