Barcelona FC captain Leonel Messi won the Golden Shoe for the 2018/19 season, for being the top scorer in the European leagues with 36 goals (in 34 games). This is his sixth Golden Shoe.

  • Messi has won the trophy for a 3rd straight year (or consecutively) after scoring 36 goals. His goals are only three more than his closest challenger, Kylian Mbappe of Paris Saint-Germain.
  • Leonel Messi now has two more Golden Shoes than his legendary rival Cristiano Ronaldo, a Portuguese professional footballer.
  • The award was originally called Soulier d’Or, which in French translates means as Golden Shoe/Boot. The award was created in the 1967–68 season when it was won by Eusebio. Since 1996–97 season the award is given by European Sports Media.
  • This award trophy is in shape of a football boot and is presented each season to leading goal scorer in league matches from top division of every European national league.
