ISRO and DRDO joined hands for ‘Gaganyaan’ mission


The Space agency of the Government of India(GoI), Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop human-centric systems for the ‘Gaganyaan’ project.

  • A team of ISRO scientists, headed by Dr. S. Unnikrishnan Nayar, director of the Human Space Flight Center (HSFC), entered into agreements with various DRDO laboratories. 
  • Some of the important technologies provided by DRDO to ISRO include food-related technologies in space, health monitoring of space going teams, survival kits, radiation measurement and protection, parachutes, etc.
  • DRDO is committed to providing all necessary support to ISRO for manned space mission. ISRO plans to demonstrate man’s ability to reach space before the completion of 75 years of India’s independence in 2022.
  • Gaganyaan is a proposed manned space mission by the Government of India (GoI) with an investment of Rs 10,000 crore. This will be India’s first manned mission, to be launched by 2022. On August 15, 2018, the mission was announced by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi in his independence day speech from Red Fort.
