Bold Kurukshetra–2019 a joint military exercise held between India and Singapore :

A three-day joint military exercise between India and Singapore named ‘Bold Kurukshetra–2019’ started in Jhansi’s Babina Cantonment, Uttar Pradesh to strengthen cooperation against terrorism, develop defence technology and boost maritime security. Colonel SP Singh led the Indian counterpart, and Lieutenant Colonel Tong Chong Kiat led the Singapore counterpart. Brigadier Ranjan Keron reviewed the march past of both the contingents.

NGT sets up a Central Monitoring Committee :

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has constituted a Central Monitoring Committee to ensure the implementation of the action plan meant for reducing pollution stretched across the country. A Bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel considered the seriousness of the issue and inadequacy of success achieved so far, it concluded that it is necessary to constitute a Central Monitoring Committee to undertake a national initiative by way of preparation and enforcement of a national plan to make river stretches pollution-free. The panel will constitute members from Senior representatives of NITI Aayog, Secretaries of the Ministry of Water Resources, Ministry of Urban Development, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, apart from the Chairman, Central Pollution Control Board, and Director General, National Mission for Clean Ganga.

Emirates Islamic, a bank in Dubai, becomes the world’s first Islamic bank to launch banking via WhatsApp :

Emirates Islamic bank launched a chat banking facility for its customer via Whatsapp and become the world’s 1st bank in the Islamic banking sector to give such facility. It was supported by Infobip. This chat banking solution allows customers to check account balances, temporarily blocking or unblockingof an existing card.

National Safe Motherhood Day is celebrated on April 11 :

National Safe Motherhood Day (NSMD) is observed annually on 11 April to raise awareness about the proper healthcare of women and maternity facilities to pregnant and lactating women. The theme of 2019 NSMD is “Midwives for Mothers”. Last year’s NSMD theme was ‘Respectful Maternity Care’. This day also raise awareness for the prevention of child marriages, that may be an indirect cause of maternal deaths. 

Abdelkader Bensalah appointed as Algeria’s New President :

Algeria’s parliament confirmed Abdelkader Bensalah as the new interim president of the country, following resignation by the ailing Abdelaziz Bouteflika. Bouteflika’s resignation, fuelled by protests that have lasted over a month, means Algeria has a new president for the first time in 20 years.

Smriti Mandhana named Wisden’s Leading Women’s Cricketer Of The Year :

Team India opener Smriti Mandhana has been named as the Wisden Almanack’s ‘Leading Women’s Cricketer of the Year’. The 22-year-old is currently the top-ranked player in women’s ODIs and third in T20Is. In 2018, Mandhana scored 669 runs at an average of 66.90 in 12 ODIs and 622 runs at a strike-rate of 130.67 in 25 T20Is.
