General Bipin Rawat to be first Chief of Defence Staff. He will end his tenure as the Army Chief in December 2019. He will take over as the first Chief of Defence Staff – a four-star position being created as part of a defence management overhaul. He will get a term of 2 years as the CDS. He took over as the 27th Chief of Army Staff on 31 December 2016 after General Dalbir Singh retired.

General Bipin Rawat is the 27th Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army. He served office on 31 December 2016 after the retirement of General Dalbir Singh. He is the Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee.

The joint operations and tri-services commands are likely to be overseen by the CDS the top officer is set to be heavily involved in and procurement of military equipment. He served a rare full three-year term as the Army Chief. He provides military advise to the government and implement joint procurement by the three services.
