Alejandro Giammattei elected as the new president of Guatemala


Conservative Alejandro Eduardo Giammattei Falla was elected as Guatemala’s 51st President from Vamos party defeating Sandra Torres, Former first lady(spouse of Alvaro Colom- 47th Guatemala president) by gaining more than 58% of the votes.

  • Giammattei succeeds outgoing corruption-tainted President Jimmy Morales (50th president of Guatemala). Morales will be leaving office in 2020 in the month of January.
  • Giammattei, a 63-year-old doctor and former prison chief were defeated in three previous presidential elections.
  • People from Mexico migrate to the United States(US) through Guatemala which recently created high political tensions and reflected in the presidential elections where Giammattei strongly opposes US president Trump’s immigration deal.
  • Guatemala is a central American country, south of Mexico and is home to volcanoes, rainforests and ancient Mayan sites.
