Gopalkrishna Gandhi has been chosen for the 24th Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award for his contribution in promoting communal harmony, peace and goodwill. The award was instituted to honour Rajiv Gandhi’s remarkable contribution to promote peace, communal harmony and struggle against violence.
Gopalkrishna Gandhi :
According to a biography of Gopalkrishna Gandhi, he was on born April 22, 1945. He is the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, and son of Devadas Gandhi and Lakshmi Gandhi. His maternal grandfather was C Rajagopalachari (Rajaji). As a former IAS officer, Gandhi has also served as High Commissioner to South Africa and Sri Lanka, among other diplomatic posts. Most notably he served as Governor of West Bengal from 2004 to 2009. He was the joint Opposition candidate for President of India in the last Presidential election.
Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award :
It is an Indian award given for outstanding contribution towards promotion of communal harmony, national integration and peace. The award was instituted by All India Congress Committee of the Indian National Congress Party (INC), in 1992 to commemorate the lasting contribution made by the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, carries a citation and a cash award of Rs. ten lakhs. It is given on 20 August, the birth anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi, which is celebrated as Sadbhavna Diwas (Harmony Day).
